Disinformation: The biggest reason Kamala Harris lost

Democrats have lost the White House, and it’s crucial to understand the reasons behind this outcome. Over the coming weeks, you’ll encounter various perspectives. Some will point fingers at President Joe Biden, others at Vice President Kamala Harris, while some argue that Democrats no longer resonate with blue-collar workers.

But, when it comes to understanding why the Democrats faced defeat, there’s an undeniable and significant factor that cannot be ignored.

Disinformation (noun)
disənfərˈmāSH(ə)n,disˌinfərˈmāSH(ə)n/
False information purposely spread to influence public opinion or obscure the truth. This information is often spread through social media and can cause people to mistrust reliable sources. Disinformation is a growing issue in our globally connected society.

Donald Trump’s reelection as president on Tuesday is a troubling development, especially considering his previous role in inciting a coup that led to the disgraceful storming of the U.S. Capitol and his subsequent exit from office.

His return can be largely attributed to a deceitful right-wing information network that has enabled him to sidestep numerous scandals—scandals that would typically spell the end for most political figures—thus propelling him back to power.

Conservative audiences often rely heavily on a right-wing media network that consistently feeds them misinformation and grievances. This environment discourages them from seeking alternative sources of information, such as established news outlets, government officials, or medical experts. By broadening their media consumption to include diverse perspectives, they could gain a more balanced understanding of the issues at hand.

When Trump took control of the GOP and became president in 2017, he effectively utilized a supportive bubble to serve his interests. This environment was instrumental in persuading his followers to believe in an extensive conspiracy theory, which depicted him as a victim of a secretive “deep state” cabal. This narrative provided justification for significant retaliatory actions, reinforcing the need for unwavering support and action from his base.

The January 6 insurrection posed a significant challenge for Trump’s propagandists. As a result, Rupert Murdoch, at the helm of a media empire that includes influential right-wing outlets like Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and New York Post, privately advocated for Trump to be sidelined. However, Tucker Carlson and his associates at Fox and other platforms chose to craft an alternative narrative absolving Trump of responsibility. Disturbingly, individuals who were aware of the truth either went along with or actively engaged in sanitizing the events of that day.

Trump’s multiple indictments for a range of crimes offered clear opportunities for reflection. However, right-wing media figures, rather than using this evidence of his criminality as a basis to distance themselves, chose instead to rally around him. They actively worked to undermine the credibility of those seeking to hold him accountable, raising serious concerns about their priorities and integrity.

The right-wing media bubble’s readiness to justify Trump’s actions critically skewed the Republican primary in his favor. As he surged toward the nomination, his rivals voiced their frustration, arguing that they struggled to gain any momentum due to the party’s propaganda machinery rallying exclusively behind him.

As the general election loomed between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, right-wing propagandists have resorted to questionable tactics to maintain cohesion within the GOP base.

Their strategy involves a blend of grievance-mongering and strategic silence, pushing a misleading narrative about “migrant crime” while conveniently overlooking data that shows violent crime rates are actually declining from their peaks during Trump’s tenure.

They misguidedly directed their audiences to unfairly blame immigrants, spreading false claims that federal disaster aid, crucial for hurricane response, was diverted to support migrants. Additionally, they fueled appalling and unfounded rumors about Haitian immigrants consuming pets.

They criticized the press, encouraging the Republican base to view Trump’s lackluster performance in his debate against Harris as a consequence of media bias.

When a significant number of former Republican officials and Trump’s own past administration aides issued serious warnings about Trump’s actions during his first term and potential future actions, the media chose to conceal this crucial information from their audiences. This lack of transparency is deeply concerning and raises questions about the integrity of news dissemination.

They chose to stay silent on numerous controversial elements of Trump’s policy agenda, such as Social Security and reproductive rights, all while sidestepping the growing scandals surrounding his alleged January 6 crimes, interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and a politically charged event at Arlington National Cemetery.

In the weeks and months ahead, journalists and political strategists will delve into understanding how Trump made his way back to the White House. It’s crucial to recognize that without the backing of the right-wing propaganda machine, he wouldn’t have initially secured his party’s nomination. In a nation split down the middle during a global anti-incumbent trend, this support positioned him powerfully to clinch the presidency. This narrative underscores how pivotal media influence can be in shaping political outcomes, making it essential for us to critically evaluate these dynamics as we move forward.

Now, the very propagandists who facilitated his return to power are ready to assist him in executing his radical agenda of destruction and retribution. This situation raises serious concerns about the unchecked influence and potential consequences of their actions.
